Scorecards, Dashboards

History.   2000 and prior, companies’ small to enterprise navigated their business from finance reports, market conditions and intuition; some decisions were even made on “gut feel”.  Some results were haphazard; wins paid for losses.

Today. Current technology (eg. Broadband, WiFi and Software as as Service (SaaS)) has made it possible to see Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in real time from a computer connected to the Internet. These Business Intelligence (BI) tools make it possible to see KPIs as Scorecards arranged in a Dashboard. (Note: With certain user rights, you can drill into the figures to a relative granular level to see the data making up the Scorecard.)

Advantages of SaaS.  Some enterprise e-suite executives consider these tools’ commodities to perform their role. For a small business, having access to them without the expense of on-premise hardware and software is a tremendous savings; the scalable nature of the tool [and data center partner] is equally appealing. The biggest expense of using SaaS [Financial] Dashboards are the APIs that integrate your accounting system with the service; software consultants write APIs.
